Fresno had to win last night and they did. Tonight, it's the same thing, they gotsta win to keep their season alive and if they do, they will be playing for the Throne Cup. Tonight at Selland Arena it all goes down at 7:00, tickets are cheap, the hockey is awesome.

If you're not into that and you've got a bike, hook up for a group ride. Everyone meets in front of Fresno High (on Echo) at 5:30pm then takes a nice little ride around town.

Yes, your WSHL Western Division leading, Fresno Monsters, are back in town this weekend playing the San Diego Gulls. Friday and Saturday night's game is at 7:30 at Selland, Sunday's at 2:00. Check it:

So the Monsters are doin' awesome lately: 11-0 record, forward Rob Kolander just earned American Junior Hockey's Player of the Week award, and this weekend they get to test their perfect record against the defending League Champion Phoenix Polar Bears:

When we first heard that Fresno's new hockey team was going to be made up of 17 to 21 year-olds, we wondered "Do hockey playin' teens fight?" The answer is yes:
Big props to Selland Arena's music dude for playing Van Halen's "Feel Your Love Tonight" during a brawl.

Unless you read the Bee's sports section the other day, you probably didn't realize that it's now hockey season in Fresno. The newest team in the WSHL is the Selland Arena playing Fresno Monsters and they play their first game Saturday night downtown:
Tickets are hella cheap ($10 to $19) and the team is kinda awesome. Awesome because they are fighting for their hockey lives since it's all 17-21 year-olds looking to get college scolarships or get the attention of NHL teams. Also there are a couple Fresnans on the roster - I know right? Fresnans trying to be pro hockey players, freakin' sweet!

It was a sad sad day last year when we lost the Fresno Falcons. Fresno's longest running pro team folded up shop for good, leaving a newly remodeled Selland Arena without a tenant for hockey.
Well forget all that. We have a new team (that doesn't involve the Falcons owners that screwed us) and we're fired up about it. Our new hockey team is called the Fresno Monsters and you can meet them today:
Even though the Monsters will be playing in a different league with a different level of play, there are still some familiar cities and even team names, to Fresno fans (even if they are "junior" versions). For instance, the San Diego Gulls (Fresno's old #1 rival) are there along with the Bakersfield Condor juniors and the Idaho Steelheads, to name a few.
Really, for those of you that are casual fans, the game will be the same - just younger faces playing it. And yeah, you're still going to get just as confused by icing, offsides calls and *CARLS JR POWER PLAYYYS*... will there be Carls JR power plays? Might have to find that out tonight.
The first Monsters game at Selland is September 19th against Bakersfield.
