If you didn't see this in a nice Fresno post over at Famous, Fresno Filmworks's annual Fresno Film Festival is this weekend. Lot's of interesting films this year, like always. Check the schedule, see what looks good. The festival runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In case you haven't heard yet, tonight's the night for the big Downtown For Japan show at Fulton 55. Fresno's music community is coming together to help the people of Japan. Obvious good cause to go along with a night of stellar local talent .

If you can't go, maybe buy some tickets and that will count the same as a donation, we imagine. 100% of the door will go to American Red Cross' Japan relief efforts.
There will be merch there too and 100% of the profits will also go to the Red Cross. Shirts are $10:

Folks new to a Strange Vine show, not knowing about drummer Ian Blesse and his ways, and hear guitar, vocals, drums and organ (but see only two guys) assume the organ sound is some track or something.
Then, on closer inspection say "What the hell? Is the drummer doing the organ, drums AND backing vox?" Yes. Yes he is. And now, with this video by Local Noise using the upper deck of Fulton 55, we have clear proof of Ian's talents:

Bellingham/Seattle and the Pacific Northwest in general, is kind of a weird place. (It's where tonight's band playing Fulton 55, Yogoman Burning Band, is from, by the way.) Up there, it's pretty much just white people running around. Not a ton of cultures to balance things out, like some certain cities we know.
Well, this is what can happen when Suburban White Guy Culture goes unchecked:
Doors open at 7, show at 8. Cost is $5 but it's a "take a chance" night at Fulton 55. Meaning, paying the cover is up to you. If you don't think it's worth it, don't pay it, if you do ... do.

You may remember, the City Of Fresno owned Old Firestone building, was recommended by the Historic Preservation Commission to be listed on the local register of historic resources. The Fresno City Council/ Redevelopment Agency, felt it would be better as an empty lot.
Well, Arhop noticed today some people doing work type stuff behind the gates:

Fresno's Sparklejet. Well respected by Fresno's music community and long having the reputation of being (maybe) the loudest band in Fresno ever. They played last week at Audie's Olympic and while they weren't at their loudest, they were still damn good.
We got a live song we bootlegged from said show we'd like to share with you. The only problem is, not real sure of the name. Maybe you hardcore Sparklejet fanboys can help a blogger out in the comments and let us know what we're listening too.

Tri-tip. Fresno likes it. Taste Fresno recognized the phenomenon (it's about time somebody did) and started a Tri-tip Cook-off. The 2nd one is happening this Saturday at the SJ River Parkway & Trust (North of Woodward Park). Tickets are $10 adults, $5 under 12, free under 5.
In preperation, Alisa Manjarrez from Taste Fresno did some related interviews on the No Network. One with the ever popular Doghouse Grill. If not the best tri-tip sandwiches in town, certainly the most buzzed about:

FULTON 55: They are the premiere Van Halen tribute band: Atomic Punks. Michael Anthony (VH's original bass player) has even played with them. We've seen them before (never in Fresno) and can attest to their accuracy and show fun-ness. The only thing that is different from the real Van Halen is the singer has a better voice (and more hair) than David Lee. Sorry Dave. Buy tickets here. Locals, Blaze, opens. [$17 8pm doors 21+]

Fulton 55 is awesome and all, but it's hard to beat a good show at Audie's. Tonight is one of those shows with Fresno's Fay Wrays and Sparklejet! Boom! Two of Fresno's all-time bests.
Portland has bands too. Some are good. Some. These seem to be: The Upsidedown and Light For Fire. They'll be there too.

No we're not talking about some gym pool, country club or public pool (the City of Fresno can't afford to keep them open anyway). We're talking about a sweet "pay to play" Swim Club. You know, something like this one (minus the Sims) going up in Philadelphia:
A perfect spot would be the Mural/Cultural Arts District. What with all the hip activity happening there. Fresno is the perfect city for one of these. No beach but lots and lots of sunshine (ignoring the skies as of late).
If somebody builds one of these, we won't be able to go. It's not the money, it's just that nobody wants to see a blogger shirtless. But you beautiful Fresnans, you should start clamouring for one for sure.

A bit ago, the SLO/Fresno band, PK, was in a contest to get on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. The key word is "was" because PK did not move on in the contest. PK is being possitive about it though:
Throughout the whole Rolling Stone contest we had people listen to our music from ALL over the world, We got new fans in India, Australia, Canada... and EVERY sing US state...hundreds of people in fact, Some states even thousands... however, we still have NO listeners in ... Vermont...
I guess the Ben and Jerry's state isn't very PK ...savvy.
It's cool. At least they have a couple Fresno shows coming up. One at Fresno State (the Pit, we assume) on the 30th, and one at Neighborhood Thrift April 1st.
And there's still time to download their EP "Into The Roaring" for free (up until April 1st).
