The photocentric local website, Picture Fresno, has a challenge this week that we are all about. You use your smartphone to take a picture that is authentically Fresno. Nice.

Normally their challenges take nice equipment and talent. Too high ended for us. But this week you just need a crappy cell phone. Plus you can fix it up with some filtering. Oh wait, you still need talent though. Shit.

Well, that shouldn't stop YOU. Get to picturing Fresno .

THE BEL-TOWER: Once A tour to celebrate the realness of the Manbearpig (Finally somebody said it. Maybe Weird Fresno should cover this) has turned into the Fuck Van Flips show. Good touring acts like Triumph Over Ship Wreck, to go along with locals Your Hero Is A Villain and Sounds & Sciences. Sadly it's also the last show for the Fresno band with our favorite name: Plastic Bag Facemask. Note the early start! [$6 4:30]

TOKYO GARDEN: Active Downtown tonight, Tokyo is appropriately a part of it with Thrid Rail Power Trip. [$4 9:45]

KUPPAJOES: A lot of touring action with, Goodnight Caulfield and A Life Set Apart (Eagle, ID). Plus locals Drag Me To Shore and Clovis band Vegas Is North. [$7 7:30]

Fresno Music Representin' At This Year's SXSW Festival

If there was some way to place money on such things we'd bet this year's SXSW Festival has a record amount of Fresno bands playing ... Alright, well, maybe not a record amount. But plenty. Plenty ... There's four. Four bands.

Here is a little list of the bands (we're aware of) making the trek to Austin this year:

• Fierce Creatures.
• Motel Drive.
• Strange Vine.
• Shiver Fox.

Fay Wrays had plans to go but lost them somewhere.

Stumble around the Austin area long enough and you'll probably hear some Fresno music coming from somewhere. Shat! Wish we could be there. Guess we'll just try to combine some tequila with our F.U.S.E. Fest and Fresno Film Festival experiences plus our upcoming Rogue experience, to get a general feel of it.

All the bands could use help with gas money and what not, of course. Fierce Creatures have a whole thing setup as a way to help them out in a rewarding way. And we noticed Strange Vine showed up on a SXSW flier:

Tonight @ Fulton 55: Fay Wrays and Motel Drive!

Two of Fresno most talented bands (both heading to SXSW) in one kickass spot. Not beatable.

*HEY LOOK!: Patrick Contreras is playing across the way at Iron Bird Cafe at 7pm. So why not check in on that before the show? Seriously. Unless you're too focused on boozing at Fulton 55 before the Fay Wrays show. In which case, don't worry about it. You're good.

[UPDATED] INCOMING!: The Rhoda Penmarks at Rogue Festival

Rogue Festival is almost upon us (March 4th-12th). Check the schedule, lots of interesting stuff as always. The thing that looks most interesting to us at the moment is the Rhoda Penmarks playing a live soundtrack to "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde". Live music mixing with a little bit of theater (but without all that live ... "acting") all while having a few beers. Should be good:

Related: Ben McEntee, from the Fay Wrays and Rhoda Penmarks, was recently on the local podcast "I Don't Get It". It's a good listen as Ben talks about the Rogue Festival and Fresno's music scene and this awesome local music site. Check it.

Monday Morning Hangover: Old People Need Chairs

Saturday night's MoFo Party Band's Anniversary Show (Mofo was awesome as always) brought about our first Fulton 55 complaint: Tables and chairs don't work on the ground floor. It's cool if they're upstairs (except when they're on the railing taking up good spots like Saturday). But they were awkward in front of the band. Made the place feel smaller and dampened the 'party' atmosphere.

But, a Mofo crowd can be a bit older. Old people like to sit. Hopefully the tables will be put upstairs when a different crowd is there.

We shot some video. It sucked as usual. That's why we're posting Matt's video from Saturday night, instead:

Last week was a rough one to get through for the under 21 folk (Bel-Tower was the only option). That is NOT the case this weekend. Grips of shows for everyone. Really, there's like lots and stuff. It's freaking sweet. So let's get to it. Let's bandgeek!

Goofy As Shit: Chuck Leonard Picketing Sequoia Brewery

Chuck Leonard, host of Central Valley Buzz on Central Valley Talk Network, is fed up with the Tower District's Sequoia Brewery and is picketing the place on Friday. What sparked this? This is what Chuck is saying:

I go to Sequoia Tower with a group last night to see the band and have a beer. As we walk in, we say hi to the band and some other friends. In less than 5 minutes, two different employees tell us we have to leave if we don't order something right then. One was the manager saying "it's not a free concert". This was after we plugged them on our show multiple times last night. You will NEVER see me in there again!

Chuck's group is "Tired of locals being treated like shit!" so they'll be out on Olive Friday night from 7 to 9 with signs in hand.

Call it a publicity stunt. Call it a case of "Don't you know who I am!" Call it Tower Justice. Whatever. All we know is: This will be the most awesome picket line EVAAR and we're going to need a couple Moto Brews to enjoy the hell out of it.

Get A Fresnan On The Cover Of Rolling Stone!

 

Rico Rodriguez. Native Fresnan and drummer for rock band, PK. He has a big opportunity and needs Fresno's help. His band (actually based in San Luis Obispo but Rico lives in Fresno) is in a national contest to play live on Jimmy Fallon AND be on the first unsigned band on the cover of Rolling Stone.

They are currently in the first round of four. They are battling 15 other acts of various genres. As Jimmy says, it's a sorta March Madness style tournament. The champ gets the RS cover, Jimmy and a major deal with Atlantic.

Pretty big.
