It seems Fresno isn't alone in losing its indie nerds and punks to Portland, and in making fun of the "Rose City".
If you haven't seen yet, IFC has a new show starting up called "Portlandia". It's with Fred Armisen (from SNL) and Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney. It's a sorta sketch comedy show using Portland stereotypes as a base to work from. Looks like it may be some nice spoofing of Portlanders (YES!), as some of the clips, the first episode and the stellar song "The Dream Of The 90s Is Alive In Portland" indicate:
Portlanders on Facebook seem to be taking the joke in stride and enjoying the spotlight - being proud of their weirdness. Not sure if Fresnans could take the parody-ing as well if there was a show making fun of us called Freslandia... Fresnanders... Fresnoice.
Nah, we could take it. We is alls grows up nows. In fact, there SHOULD be a comedy show based on Fresnans. It shall be called "Frestopia". It will have Fresnans with multiple barbecues for cooking tri-tip AND asada for tacos. It will have NE Fresno Soccer Moms roaming River Park for 10 minutes looking for the magical perfect spot. It will have Tower Rats asking people for change so they can go buy weed. Tagging Crews will be setting fashion trends and will be the mob of Fresno ... wait wait, this "Frestopia" show is gonna suck. Scrap it. But "Portlandia" looks good.
The dream of the 90s is alive in Portland? The dream of forever is alive in Fresno.
