More info on Child Of Giants after the break.
Screening in Fresno is deeply appropriate for Child of Giants as Fresno was the birthplace of one of the titular giants, Maynard Dixon, one of the most celebrated painters of western landscapes. His wife photographer Dorothea Lange is most known for her era defining photos of the Great Depression including the iconic “Migrant Mother” picture. While giants of the arts, Dixon and Lange were less than ideal parents as this documentary, largely narrated by their son, noted “Mad Men” era ad man, Daniel Dixon relates.
Variety called the film “a skillful overview of their work and influence while measuring the toll taken on impressionable young minds they tried to mold in their own image,” concluding that “plentiful archival materials illustrate this engaging, well-crafted chronicle.”
San Francisco Magazine noted that “if you’re after great visuals, such as Maynard Dixon’s series of early Sunset Magazine covers or his stirring post-divorce abstractions, along with a trove of rarely seen Lange photos, you’ll find that Child of Giants delivers the goods.”
In addition to the screening the event will feature a party with hearty appetizers, delectable deserts, wines, and holiday music by the Bullard High School Choir under the direction of Brad Feyma. Guests will also enjoy never before exhibited paintings and drawings from Maynard Dixon and photographs by Dorothea Lange. Tickets are on sale now for $50.00 per person which includes food, wine and the film. For ticket information and purchase please call (559) 441-4221.
