The Univision Tower on Herndon is almost done...maybe it is done, how can ya tell really? So, since it's here and isn't going anywhere, I guess we just...accept itnow? Make it a tourist attraction? Do bungee jumping off it?
Does it have a nickname yet? What should it be?
UPDATE: The window is closed, guys. The winners have been chosen and sent emails. Thanks for commenting everyone and we can't wait to do another pass giveaway in the future.
ORIGINAL POST:
As a director, Sam Raimi, is best known for the Spiderman movies. But, ask a horror nerd and they'll tell ya the Evil Dead series is true Sam Raimi. Well, to please those nerds and hopefully everyone else, Sam has finally returned to his scary-good old self with DRAG ME TO HELL, in theaters May 29th.
But what does DRAG ME TO HELL have to do with this Fresno blog?
Well, you can see an advanced screening, on us; it's about time you got some payback for sifting through this blog on a regular basis. Fresno is getting a special screening on Tuesday May 26 at 7:30 and we've got passes to it, Fresnans. Yep, we're almost as cool as DumbDrum.
All you have to do is leave us a comment on this post and you're entered. Don't care what it says, but we secretly hope it's something about the movie...or Sam Raimi...or how hot Alison Lohman looks in the above poster.
Winners will be chosen all random style. There are plenty to go around so get to that comment, but you'll only be counted once. We'll let you know when we've got all our winners with a updated post and by emailing the winners, so remember to put your email in the box where it asks ya too.
What are we giving passes to, exactly?
Let's watch:
If that doesn't fire you up, how about a synopsis? Way better than slick trailers, right?:
You haven't forgot about this, have you? Sudz in the City is Saturday. (Hint: Get there early before all the beer is gone and all the assholes show up).
This is the festival's 15th year. Remember when it started at the Water Tower? It was small, but nobody seemed to run out of beer and it didn't get all crazy. Just people drinking some different beers and being social.
But then, it got bigger and eventually moved to Chuckchansi Park (we'll forget about the Box Car Parking Lot year). Better, maybe, because there are now places to sit, more stages for bands, more people to socialize with. But, that also has meant, higher ticket prices, longer lines and seemingly less choices of micro-beers.
So we ask you, oh badass readers of The Fresnan, which of these three options would you prefer?
Keeping Sudz in the City at The Chuck.
Moving it back to the Water Tower.
Third option: Move it to the Fulton Mall.
Whatcha think? Comment, Fresnans.
(We know we don't have the numbers of, say, blogs like The Hive. So please comment and don't leave us hanging here, looking more douchebagier than we already do.)
Remember last week when Dredg was here? Well, Boner444 (he hehe, he, boner) has posted video of their performance at Starline. Listen closely after the 3:15 mark when some obnoxious talkers get told to "shut up" during a poignantly quiet moment:
Heads up Fresnans! Playing at Starline (working an all ages format tonight) it's: San Diego band Boomsnake , Long Beach band The Valley Arena and Sacramento's Buildings Breeding (awwhhhh dudes, awesome name).
What Else Should We Know About Tonight? >More info on Buildings Breeding. >I bet Fresno Mag' blogger, Conlan, will be there. >The Valley Arena have a new album coming out which contains a remix by Ikey Owens of The Mars Volta. >The show is only five bucks and starts at 9-ish.
Did you see the season finale of King of the Hill on Sunday night? Hank needed to piss off his Canadian neighbor by playing loud and obnoxious music. He chose 103.7 KRZR. Good choice. And yes, KRZR and its Wild Hare is in Texas too; it's like, totally everywhere, because it's that good of a fucking radio format, people.
Awwww, Wild Bunny, we're just messin' with ya.
SIDE NOTE: KRZR, if you or any other Fresno radio station plays that terrible-when-it-came-out-even-worse-now song "What It's Like" by Everlast, we're never going to switch off our Sirius radio again. Pretty sure that damn song is played every day.
We thinks you know about No Doubt and Paramore coming to the Save Mart Center tomorrow. But, do you know about the third hot-female-singer band hitting Fresno? They are called The Sounds and they have a new album coming out called Crossing The Rubicon, and they give you a reason to show up on time for the concert. You know, instead of drinking your ass off beforehand and barely making the headlining act.
We're not going to go through some lengthy description of their sound ('cause we suck at that), just decide for yourself by downloading their new song "Dorchester Hotel" for free here: dorchester_hotel.mp3
Here's a little bit of what to expect Tuesday night and BTW, we can't stop playing this video; it's really a fucking damn good song:
News flash from Captain Obvious: It was hot on Sunday. It was the kind of day that braces you for the Fresno summer ahead. And for that, we thank you, Sunday's Heat.
More reasons why yesterday's heat was a good thing for Fresnans:
Officially opened Water Balloon Season.
Swimming in May is damn sweeeeet.
It totally justified stopping the Ice Cream Man multiple times.
The last remaining whinny Fresno hipsters got scared and scurried off to Portland for the summer. (Haaa, we kid because we love...but seriously, they done run off.)
The Beehive's Mike Oz has done it again: created an awesome Fresno post. The "Blogfather" took a LA Times blog and a Fresno tweet and turned it into one FresnoTastic post: 100 Things in Fresno to Try Before You Die.
The post and comments are FresIncredible and are too numerous to mention here. If you haven't yet, go over and check them out and add one on. We'll be busy firing somebody here for not thinking of this post idea for The Fresnan. Shit!
TOKYO GARDEN: Oakland band Careerers comes through for a visit and Fresno's Wheels of Fortune will playing Fresno ambassadors...and they'll also be playing songs. And ohhh, check this out, there's a video flyer. [Time: 9 Cost: 3]
PALOMINO'S: Mike Oz and his Vintage Friday is back with "New jack swing, 90s hip hop and sweaty people on the dancefloor all night long." Sounds smelly-good. [Time: 10 Cost: Free]
AUDIE'S OLYMPIC: Local promoters Numbskull, may not have The Exit to book shows at anymore, but at least there's Audie's. Tonight, German psychobilly band Mad Sin (Yes. German. Psychobilly.) is all over Audie's stage with Rezurex, Midnight Howler and Diesel Finger.[Time: 9 Cost: In question]
There's more stuff going on but we need your help:
What are YOU out to do this weekend? What band are you seeing? What was missed here? What's happening Saturday? Leave a comment and totally promote yourself or your friend's junk.
You better see if you can reserve a pedicab for tonight, you're going to need a driver because there are three places to get some drinking in. Or go and just not drink; some of us have to work sober in the morning.
Begin with some Tasting and Toasting of the Tower. This thing can be good if you're not already familiar with the Tower eateries (or wine selections), but kinda-not-all-that if you are.
Then you can try and convince your pedicab driver to take you Downtown to the Grizzlies game for "Mad Tight Nineties Night".
Apparently, the last show ever, at the all ages venue The Exit, happened on Monday. MySpace told us, so it must be true. Yep.
We just can't decide if this is a good or bad thing. Really, never heard a true positive note about this place. Never. Buuuut, The Exit had a lot of great bands come through. Bands that would not have had a place to play in town otherwise (I guess that's one positive note).
So, is a troubled (and very hot) music venue closing bad because there is one less place for bands to play? Or good, because the place was stark and in a shitty spot with no AC and did little promotion, anyway.
You know when you go to see one band and some other band opening-up for them (that you've never heard of) kicks fucking ass? And the band you came to hear sounds kinda "eeh" after that?
Well that's what happened last night at Starline when Torche (pic above) kicked fucking ass and headliner Dredg, was kinda, you know, okay.
Judgement Day wasn't too bad of an opener either. SIDE NOTE: Yo, Mr. Patrick Contreras, you gotta check these Judgement Day characters out, man.
This is a current picture of the southeast corner of Ashlan and First:
Notice something? YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT, IT'S ALL FUCKING GONE!
That whole old sweet little shopping center. With the quaint liquor store and classic old dry cleaners and old Foodland (well, it's been gone a while, but still). It had all the old signage and wood shake roofs and big trees. The center just plain matched the feel of the old Fresno neighborhood around it, and now it's gone. Just like that.
Going up in it's place is a Wallgreens. Wow, um like, really worth clearing the whole center for that. By the way, are Rite Aids and Wallgreens going to be taking over all our corners now?
The Fresnan is a blog drunk on Fresno's sweet sweet booze.
We like posting about local music and random Fresno culture junk. We like Downtown, tri-tip, South of Shaw battles, tamales and remembering when there was a fig orchard at Herndon & Palm. We like to occasionally go to River Park but tell people we never go there.
