Bandgeek: Post Christmas Music For Fresnans

So obviously this weekend will be on the light side for bands. But, with the holidays comes the natives rolling back into town, which can sometimes produce reunion shows and Saturday has a good one. So, if you've still got family in town and you want to get their ass out of the house, why the hell not see a band? We humbly suggest you try this stuff:

FRIDAY

YOUR MOM'S: Uncle Bob, again, trying to play some lame Christmas song after the family dinner. "Hey! Uncle Bob! You can't fucking play guitar OR sing. Stop ruining Christmas!"

SATURDAY

CHINATOWN YOUTH CENTER: It's gonna be totally hardcore at the CYC with Albuquerque band Dead Hours and San Fran's Until Your Heart Stops. [Doors: 5:30 Cost: $?]

STARLINE: Fresno welcomes back the entertaining asses of the Argyle Pimps, with Fresnan favs and leaders of the 'punk brown' sound: Beandip. And rounding things is Robopop. [Doors: 9 Cost: $6]

AUDIE'S OLYMPIC: Ohhh man, this is going to be cool: Pinkeye is playing. Yes! A Fresno band we really liked but never got to see live and they're reuniting for this show. Same could be said of Sparklejet. They rarely play (if at all) anymore and they will be there. Plus, new Fresno supergroup The Quiet Americans and as added bonuses, Gypsy Cab and Wheels Of Fortune. CHINATOWN YOUTH CENTER: There's been a lot of shows at the CYC lately and tonight's looks good with Nations Afire (with members of Unite, Death By Stereo and Rise Against) - that's a damn fine get for CYC. Back again, doing our little part to help raise Fresno's awareness of local music, umm...awareness?... band knowing...knowledge...local music IQ? In other words, let's find out what bands are playing where, this weekend:

STARLINE: Yo metal chicks! You will be getting free metal from Grooveyard, Shadow Beat, Ritual, Synerza. Sorry dudes but you've gotta pay for your metal. [Doors 8:30 Cost $6 for guys - $0 for ladies] 

AUDIE'S OLYMPIC: In town are punk rockers The Dollyrots, also playing Dead Hooker Society, Three Cord Whore and The Inoculators. [Time: 9 Cost:$7]

CHINATOWN YOUTH CENTER: By the band names, we're guessing it's not country night at the CYC: Smoke My Pipe, Weekend Nachos, Sick And Tired, Too Many Screaming Children, Impulse, Lifeless. [Start: 5:30 Cost: 7]

BOBA FUSION: Different place for bands but these guys sponsor a lot of shows, might as well throw one at their own place. It's all acoustic sets from Subdue, Dirty Sanchez, Hot Shade, Down Word. [Time: 7-10 Cost: $6]

CLUB RETRO: Full slate of bands (what the hell is a full slate, anyway?) and all ages are welcome to catch Fallen Pilot, Love Like Rockets, Always Say Never, Catch Us If You Can, The Union and Falsett. [Doors: 7 Cost: $10]

ECHO STREET: Occasionally this coffee shop, across from Fresno High, will have some cool music happening. Tonight is one of those occasions with Brother Luke and the Comrades, Sing The Body and Jonah and the Whale. [Start: 7 Cost: None]

STARLINE: What the hell is 'crunkcore' and where the hell would someone go to hear this crunk coring? That would be the Starline tonight with touring bigshots Brokencyde playing. Find out all about their mockerying of the music world by reading Mike Oz' interview with them. [Doors: 6 Cost: $15]

AUDIE'S OLYMPIC: AC Miles, he of the blues rock family, will be battling his guitar for your amusement. [Time:9:30 Cost:$5]

KUPPAJOES: Fresno favorites, Picture Atlantic, return to the 'no and plays all ages style with PK, Vogue In The Movent, Some Kind Of Wonderful and Jeffery Conway. [Doors: 7:30 Cost: $8] 

CYC: They're hardcore punkers, they're from Maine and they're on a big national tour... their name is Outbreak and they have Soul Control along with them. Plus more hardcoreness. [Doors: 5:30 cost: $11]

LUCKY 13: Mike Oz at the Beehive broke the news Thursday, the Lucky 13 is closing and it's the last weekend for music, thus the last time we'll be posting about shows, like Friday's with Synezra, Hot Shade, Blackbird and This Planet, Prelude. [Start:8 Cost:$6]

We've already heard about the awesome SwedeFest #4 at Starline on Saturday. And the creative blending that will be happening at the Silver Dollar on Friday. 

But bandwise, what the Fresno is going on?

FRIDAY

AUDIE'S OLYMPIC: Exene Cervenka. No she's not a Czechoslovakian skater. She used to be head punk of the band X. But now she is older and that means she is much less punky and much more folksy. [Time: 9 Cost: $10]

TOKYO GARDEN: The Rockabilly of Motel Drive will be the headlining and Jailbreak's... will not be. [Start: 9 cost $5]

KUPPAJOES: Rolling into town is the "Lost Rebellion Tour" with The Wedding. With A Current Affair, I Am Empire and Old Man Shattered. [Doors: 7:30 Cost $10]

LUCKY 13: This club is getting back into the rock of things with the Dirty Sanchez and some other bands... we assume. [Time: 10 Cost: $5]

THE REVUE CAFE: We believe this to be the second time there is live music happening at the Revue? Yeah? The more venues the better, we say. Apparently playing is Brother Luke, Jonah and the Whale and Malcolm Sosa. [Time: 8 Cost: Free - All Ages]

STARLINE: It's a rocking CD release party for that one dude, Keeney. Playing along is Dislodic, Medium, The Disconnectors, This Midnight Scene. [Doors: 8 Cost: $6 - All Ages]

FresGeek Weekend: Green Eggs, Fetishes, Costumes and Zebras Killing Lions

Before we get to the music, there are a couple key sports goings on this weekend as the dominate Fresno Monsters will be at Selland Arena (perfect hockey barn) Friday and Saturday. And of course, Saturday Pat Hill's Catch Ryan Mathews While Ya Can Tour hits Bulldog Stadium.

FRESNO MET: Yes, as you see from the flier, the Fresno Metropolitan Museum is having one of their special nights, this one with a Dr. Seuss theme. Plenty of great Fresno music with Uni & Her Ukelele, El Olio Wolof, Wheels Of Fortune and Yesterday's Chonies. Yep, that Fashawn show at the Tower Theatre is going to be huge - we're very curious on how packed that big'ol theatre will be Saturday.

AUDIE'S OLYMPIC: Bueno bueno, it's Los Creepers headlining with Los Muertones and Rites Of Retribution not headlining. [Time: 8-ish Cost: $7]

CYC: This place always a lot of bands on one bill and most with fucked up names like: Necrowizard. And then there are others like grindcore-ers Despise You, Crom, Too Many Screaming Children and so on. [Doors: 6 Cost: $7]  

STARLINE: Rockers Stoneshiver are playing their last show ever (ehhh that's what they all say) and they are bringing Space Hooker and Dislodic along to help play them out. [Doors: 8:30 Cost: $5]

Fresgeek Weekend: Fig Garden Metal and Pud Pulling

Yep, the big ol Fresno Fair is in full swing, Fresno Filmworks has a funnyass movie showing tonight and Monster hockey is happening at Selland Arena Friday and Saturday (awesome). And yeah, you may still have a re:fuse hangover, but what better way to cure a hangover than a some hair of the local music dog that bit ya.

AUDIE'S OLYMPIC: Being billed as a Lybra Birthday Bash, this one is saying "Screw bands!" and going all DJ with ones like Mykal Powell, F-Plus and more. [Starts: 9 Cost: Free]

STARLINE: Surely something must be happening. It's a major Fresno club and it's the weekend. But, as this post is being written, we don't know what the hell is going on over there - we know what was happening last month, just not tonight. [Doors: Maybe never. Cost: It could be video game tokens for all we know.]

KUPPAJOES: A lot of all ages music tonight with Sing The Body, Coolfield, The Radiance Effect, Troubled By Insects and Amanda Hammitt. [Doors: 7 Cost: 7]

SEQUOIA BREW: The Tower District brewhouse will be hosting a HR7 CD release party - let the Motto Brew flow! [Time 8:30 Cost: Free?]

BELANA: What's goin on with this Belana place anyway!? It's in Fig Garden Village and it's got all these rock and metal shows going on there; just seems like a weird crowd mix is all. Tonight, Fresno rock vets, Six Ounce Gloves will mix it up with the Village folks. Subdue will be there too, along with re:FUSE Fest breakout hit: Down Word. [Doors: 9 Cost: 8]

We heard that Buffalo Guns will be at Tokyo Garden - pretty sweet. Tesla's Dave Rude will be at Starline. And downtown at the Crest... we think the flier says it all:

FresGeek Weekend: There's re:FUSE Fest and... other stuff

Gezzz this is just an insane music weekend. Think it's safe to say the biggest of the year. If you're a fan of live music at all, we sure hope you're in town because there are many things going on, biggest being re:FUSE Fest. Yeah, full disclosure, we helped a little putting this year's festival on so we're pretty biased when suggesting FUSE is where to be this weekend (full re:FUSE post later), but we don't want to ignore the other music-y things going on.

But before you head out there this weekend, you better watch out for Zombies roaming Fresno. If they want your brain, let them have it - you wouldn't want to be rude.

AUDIE'S OLYMPIC: Oh boy, Strange Vine is doubling up this weekend because before they play re:FUSE Fest Saturday, they play Audie's tonight with Rademacher (yeah they just played last night, so what) and headliners from the Bay: The Mother Hips. [Time: 9ish Cost: 12]

CYC: Rock will be at the center with touring band I The Fake with Fresno's Descend Factor, Mercury Bullet and Dislodic. At least the weather is nice so the lack of AC won't kill ya. [Doors: 6 Cost: 7] 

STARLINE: Lance Armstrong has proclaimed this National Livestrong Dayand Fresno is taking part by having big time Fresnans play like MoFo Party Band, DB & The Struggle, Roger Perry and Patrick Contreras (that dude is everywhere this week). [Doors: 8 Cover: 10]

KUPPAJOES: Enjoy Via Coma, Greener By Color, The Thomas Confession and Giraffrica. [Doors: 7:30 Cost: 7]

FULL CIRCLE: This is a nice new edition to the re:FUSE Fest. A band showcase to get you ready for Saturday with short, stripped down sets by folks like Synerza, Blake Jones, Brother Luke, Dale Stewart, Scats On The Slyand more. Folks playing Saturday will be hanging out, drinking beer and being all networky. You can also pick up your wristband early, if you so desire. Five bucks gets you in, or just plunk down 15 to get you in for everything re:FUSE Fest this weekend. [Time: 8 Cost: 5 (or 15 festival wristband)]

But just as fun as that is the Creative Fresno backed Blender happening at Full Circle starting at 5, leading into the re:FUSE pre-party:

Yes! The Fresno Urban Sound Experience festival is finally here! So pumped (more on that later)! But something also very awesome is happening Saturday and that is a performance from Lets Go Bowling at Audie's Olympic. But what's cool is, you can go to FUSE and this:

But that isn't all, there is also a D4D party at Starline and the Pink Show at the Tower Theatrewhich is a benefit for breast cancer awareness. Steve Ono, Lance Canales, Martin Viramontes and Patrick Contreras will be there (there he is again).

OROSI: Yes we are treating the town of Orosi as a venue... but it really is tonight, with the very cool Spanspek festival. The boys pulled together a great lineup with the Escorts, Zebra Kills Lion, Opus Dai, Drag The Lake, Inconsciente and  Abandoned Soulz. [Doors: 6:30 Cost: 5]
