Fresno's really showing off now. It's Spring and there's too damn much going on, especially for one shitty blogger to keep up with. ArtHop is tonight with dumps of stuff (artists love it when you refer to their pieces as "dumps of stuff") all over at places like this:

Also, that blog that has never stopped believing that blogs are popular, the Fresno Beehive, are putting on another Tweetup with the Grizzlies, poolside:

Downtown Fresno is all into doing stuff on Thursday nights now:

There's probably a buncha other junk happening too...after all it is Fresno: lot's of stuff happens here.

In Fresno Tonight: A Rogue-y Beginning

It's the time of year in Fresno when the Creative Community goes balls out. Besides the standard awesome Fresno stuff, the next 10 days has the added bonus of the Rogue Festival (hope you've been saving your Rogue Dollars).

Tonight has many choices. First there's Art Hop, plenty of stuff to do. Like a can't miss Jazz Hop show at the new CMAC with Poor Man's Poison, or Art Hop stuff like this:

There's the beginning of Rogue with stuff like this and this and this:

Then there's the typical Thursday night music stuff with AC Myles at the Lamp Post and a tour kick off show from Bully The Kid and I Do Not Exist:

The next 10 days in Fresno shall be interesting:

Tonight: Become Part Of Fresno's 'Hop Scene'

You know an event has become a established success when other events are created BECAUSE of the original event... "by-products" is maybe the word we're searching for here. Fresno's Art Hop has by-products.

One of the cooler ones is Bike Hop. Fresno cyclists meet-up then ride around to various Art Hop venues together. Not the worst way to enjoy some Fresno art, that's for sure.

A second cool by-product is Jazz Hop. Mixed in with the art venues are local musicians playing some quality jazz music. Again, not the worst way to enjoy some Fresno art. Or, well, a good way to work on your ignoring art skills as you listen to music. Many spots you can find some jazz tonight, such as (click to enlarge):

Of course this being the first Thursday of the month, Arthop will kick this night off, hard. Lots going on, like the Schmooze & Booze, Sahab playing and more cool stuff. Fresno's energy level stays high after all that with a big show at Audie's Olympic:

The Gypsy Rock kings of San Francisco, Diego's Umbrella, returns to Fresno tonight with our noise making gents The Quiet Americans, opening up. Diego's Umbrella plays more like a band out of Europe than California. In fact they have toured extensively, throughout the world, and have become a cult favorite over there. They bring with them a rep for putting on big live shows. Tonight should be no different.

 

Also tonight, in Chinatown at the CYC, the folks at Drivingchange Productions presents: So Cal hardcore punks Alpha & Omega, with Xibalba, Running Scared and Farooq:

You don't need to be reminded it's ArtHop night or day or whatever... really you can say day since it'll be sunny and 100 or something at 6 tonight when ArtHop is in full swing. So yeah, go to some art stuff.

After that there are a couple music options, not as many as a usual post hop, but...

EUREKA BURGER

Fresno ska rock-steady (guess it's a thing) outfit, King Sugar will be skanking from 9 till whenever. No cover and drink specials throughout the night.

AUDIE'S OLYMPIC

Morbid fun punk rock (wait... morbid fun?) band out of Santa Cruz: Stellar Corpses. Surely they're playing with other bands but nobody seems to know (at the time of writing this) who they are or how much it'll be. We'll just assume 9PM, $5 with [insert Fresno rockabilly punk band here] and those awesome dudes from [insert Madera physcobilly band here] and call it good.

ArtHop Night Fresno: New Openings and Afterparties

As always, many things to do in Fresno on the first Thursday... cause that's Arthop night and stuff. Things like the Arthop opening a #newplace and a new space:

Who says Downtown Fresno rolls up the sidewalks at 5:01pm?

Choice one: Arthop. As for choices: DCAC, City Arts, plus D Mo' has some good ones. We're for sure looking to hit The Treasury:

   

Choice two: Fresno Grizzlies opening night. Brandon Belt sucks crap anyway. Who needs him? We got these dudes ... and dollar beers:

 

Choice three: Wicked. It'll get you, my pretty ... and your little dog too ... for many days. Two weeks, actually:

Choice four: Fulton 55. The night begins (at 7) with a comedy showcase featuring Tony Baker, Dean Delray and more. Then, later, a hip-hop show featuring:

Choice five: Post Arthop at Tokyo Garden. Call it an after party for all this dowtown action, with Rademacher, Light FM and Mauren Parcels. Show will probably start around 9:30 or so and cost $5.

Rogue 2011: Recommendations For Shows With Fresnans That Are Awesome

BIG SHOW OR BUST
This one has has Joshua Tehee, Jamie Holt and Blake Jones. About: "Police entanglements, Fresno city permits, hellhounds on their trail, pitiless club owners, wives and girlfriends on the brink of losing patience.  Will the band ever fulfill their dream and make it to the Big Show?"

BIRDS & BEES ... A COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS

ROGUE FILM
This year the film component spotlights the locally produced feature length film: Stricken. About: "As hope seems lost, Detective Scott Aro and Sarah Black must face an evil that has been unleashed and battle to stay alive as they discover that some things won’t stay dead. It waits in the dark."
Showings: 7 tonight (more next week). Location: Mike Briggs Building.

DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE WITH LIVE SOUNDTRACK
Specially assembled Fresno band the Rhoda Penmarks playing their own live soundtrack to the silent film Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Showings: 8 tonight! (door 7:30) (plus two shows next weekend) Location: Audie's Olympic.

WINNING!: Fresno's 'Rogue Festival' Begins TONIGHT! ... oh and there's Arthop too

Fresno will be HOP-ing tonight *groan* as two major Fresno culture events hop at the same time: Arthop and Rogue Festival.

March's Arthop is filled with cool stuff like Uriel J. Tekunoff at DCAC:

Also tonight, it's that one special day of year for Fresno when Rogue and Arthop mix. Tonight it all begins. It's the 10th year of Rogue!

Rogue things to watch tonight, during Arthop the Rogue Gallery Exhibit will be in effect. Plus the big Rogue Festival kick off party at Full Circle Brew.

At the party, Rogue performers will mix with the general public and also give folks a small preview of what they'll be doing in the festival. If you like collecting handbills and drinking microbrews, this is the place to be.

Also tonight, kicking off the regular performance schedule is something we (along with other bloggers) have been looking forward too: Rhoda Penmarks play the live soundtrack to Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde:

There are several showings so don't worry if you can't make it tonight. Art Hop Night: The Met Makes A One Night Comeback

Arthop tonight. Always lots of cool stuff. One of the more interesting looking options is being led by our awesome Fresnan artist buddy, Teresa Flores. It automatically sounds cool because she has managed to incorporate the Met into the exhibit. The project is called "Dismantled" and is an outdoor projection (on the old Met building, yo), public performance, based on an exploration of the California education system. Issues like access and systems of power are addressed.

Arthop: Post No Bills, Soul Kitchens and Quiet Americans

It's Art Hop day, Fresnans. A lot going on as always. The Post No Bills exibitl sounds good as it features gig poster artwork. There is always the DCAC too:

Art Hop Night: A Variety Of Boobies

You're going to go see some boobs tonight, right? Hell yeah, it wouldn't be Art Hop without boobs. There's some other stuff too, like a "Farewell To Robert Amador" at Brodway Studios - that seems like it's important.

After the art hoping, whattya gonna do? Maybe this:

Yes, Audie's Olympic has much variety tonight. Personal favorite's, the Fay Wrays, plus Chuck Dimes, Goat, The Giddy Ups, Stummies and The Blip. 9pm - 2am and it's 5 bucks.
