Fresno's bloggiest moment this week starts with a letter to the editor from a CLO-VIS businessman trying to convince us that Fresno needs to change its name. That sparks a Mike Oz post, later sparking local radio segments (because KMJ shows are always a day or two behind the blogoshpere - represent), causing one big bloggy momment of name calling on the Beehive.
We for one think this is a terrible idea, always has been. No major city has ever tried this because it would be silly as hell. A town can change its name and nobody will notice, but not a place the size of Fresno. You think you wouldn't notice if Cleveland changed its name? Wouldn't you totally lose respect for Cleveland and forever make fun of it for doing it?
We should earn respect for the name we have. If we make Fresno a cool place (we think it already is but stay with us here), the name or brand is irrelevant.
Case Lawerence (name changing letter writer) claims that sometimes when he tries to talk to out-of-town business owners about opening up in or moving to Fresno, they tell him "No!" on Fresno's name alone. And sometimes just the word Fres-No is enough for them to say no.
Um what? A business owner that doesn't want to listen about how he could improve his business by moving here, because they think our name is silly? What are they five? Do they have a fortune teller on staff? Do we really want a business to come here that ignores numbers and goes by how silly they think the name of a city is?
And since changing our name does absolutely zero in the way of changing what people make fun of Fresno for (in fact it gives them another reason to), what are we talking about here then, Mr. Lawerence? We're talking about fooling somebody into coming here with a fake name.
Do we really want to get people to move to and invest in Fresno by tricking them?
